Acid Neutralization Systems – Lab Debris

Category: Lessons Learned

Summary

Acid neutralization tanks or pits serve every lab building on the UTK campus. They adjust pH before being discharged into the sanitary sewer. They require maintenance of the neutralization material as well as removal of solid waste materials that may accumulate. Some individual labs may have a small under-bench system.

An incident occurred with the acid neutralization system outside of research building. EHS noticed debris, seemingly associated with a stream of water on the surface of a road/walkway. Pipet tips, pestles, and microcentrifuge tips were found on the ground. Materials had apparently clogged the system and were ejected to the surface.
